According to reports from the Madisonville Police Department, officers responded to a distress call at a residence at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Friday, where they discovered the young boy in critical condition, struggling to breathe and unresponsive. The child’s parents recounted that their son had consumed several strawberries from a fundraiser organized by a local high school the night before.
The situation unfolded on Thursday when the child began exhibiting symptoms shortly after ingesting the strawberries. Concerned for his well-being, the parents administered Benadryl and attempted to alleviate his discomfort by bathing him. Despite their efforts, the symptoms persisted, prompting the family to seek medical attention at a nearby emergency room around 10:30 p.m. However, they returned home hours later.
Tragically, the family’s worst fears materialized when they discovered their son unresponsive the following morning while attempting to wake him up for school. Authorities were immediately notified of the situation, marking the beginning of a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the boy’s untimely demise.
In the wake of the heartbreaking incident, the Hopkins County Health Department issued a preliminary autopsy report, which pointed towards an “isolated allergic reaction” as the probable cause of death. Dr. Christopher Kiefer, the Medical Examiner, emphasized the preliminary nature of the report while urging caution regarding the consumption of strawberries from the implicated fundraiser.
