The package notably includes the long-awaited supplemental aid requested by President Joe Biden for foreign conflicts, allocating $60 billion for Ukraine, $14 billion for Israel, and $10 billion for humanitarian assistance, including in Gaza.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., wasted no time in indicating his intention to advance the legislation this week, citing strong bipartisan support. Nevertheless, the agreement has encountered fierce criticism from prominent figures within the Republican Party, including former President Donald Trump, raising doubts about its prospects in Congress.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., lambasted the bill, declaring it “even worse than expected” and predicting it would be “dead on arrival” in the House. Several Republican senators echoed these sentiments, with Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, expressing bewilderment at any Republican supporting the proposal.
However, some GOP senators, like Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., urged a more measured approach, calling for a thorough examination of the bill before passing judgment. Lankford emphasized the importance of allowing lawmakers to express their support or opposition through the legislative process.
President Biden, in a statement released Sunday night, threw his weight behind the package, describing it as the “toughest and fairest set of border reforms in decades.” Schumer hailed it as a “monumental step,” while Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell lauded its inclusion of “direct and immediate solutions,” urging the Senate to carefully consider the opportunity presented.
