Happy Gilmore Sequel in the Works: Script Draft Revealed by Christopher McDonald

A sequel to the beloved 1996 Adam Sandler comedy “Happy Gilmore” appears to be on the horizon, as revealed by actor Christopher McDonald, a key cast member of the original film. In an interview on Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan, McDonald disclosed that he recently had a conversation with Sandler, during which the comedian unveiled the first draft of the script for “Happy Gilmore 2”.

According to McDonald, Sandler enthusiastically presented him with the draft, teasing, “McDonald, you’re gonna love this.” Despite initially contemplating whether his remarks should be excluded from the interview to avoid misleading fans, McDonald confirmed, “he did show me that [script], and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”

While specific details about the sequel remain undisclosed, sources indicate that the project is likely intended for Netflix, where Sandler and his production company, Happy Madison, have a longstanding partnership. However, both Netflix and representatives for Sandler have refrained from providing any official comments regarding the sequel’s development.

“Happy Gilmore,” one of Sandler’s most iconic films and a cornerstone of his production company alongside “Billy Madison,” follows the journey of its titular character, portrayed by Sandler himself. The story revolves around Happy Gilmore, a former hockey player with a fierce slapshot and a volatile temper. When his grandmother faces eviction due to unpaid taxes, Happy discovers an unexpected talent for golf, particularly in driving the ball extraordinary distances.

Assisted by retired golf pro Chubbs Peterson, portrayed by the late Carl Weathers, Happy embarks on a quest to join the PGA Tour in hopes of winning enough money to save his grandmother’s house. However, his unconventional and aggressive playing style clashes with the traditional decorum of golf, earning him the disdain of PGA officials and fellow players, notably Shooter McGavin, played by McDonald, a conceited and disdainful golfer threatened by Happy’s rising success.

Upon its release by Universal Pictures and directed by Dennis Dugan, “Happy Gilmore” amassed over $82 million worldwide and has since garnered a dedicated cult following. The film, written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy, features a stellar cast including Julie Bowen from “Modern Family” and a memorable cameo by the late Bob Barker.

As anticipation builds for the potential sequel, fans of “Happy Gilmore” eagerly await further updates on the project, hoping for a continuation of the comedic brilliance and endearing characters that made the original film a timeless classic.
