Multiple Rounds of Heavy Showers and Thunderstorms Expected Throughout Memorial Day Weekend

Widespread Rain and Thunderstorms Surge into Wisconsin with Warm Front

BRIDGEPORT, 26 May 2024– Last night marked the beginning of what promises to be a highly active Memorial Day weekend for North Central West Virginia (NCWV). The region was hit with two Flash Flood Warnings in Taylor and Monongalia counties, setting the stage for a weekend of unpredictable and potentially dangerous weather.

Forecasters are predicting more localized heavy rainfall tonight and continuing through the rest of the weekend, significantly increasing the risk of flash flooding. Already, scattered strong to severe thunderstorms have been sweeping through most of southwestern Pennsylvania, and more are expected to either develop or move into our area this evening. The primary threats tonight will be heavy rain and strong winds, making it crucial for residents to stay alert and prepared.

Sunday is expected to offer a brief respite from the storms, with most of the day remaining dry. However, showers are projected to return in the evening, anytime after 6 pm. This period will see the greatest potential for significant rainfall, particularly overnight into Monday morning. As a result, Memorial Day is likely to be wet across the entire area, with continued chances for showers and thunderstorms throughout the day.

The persistent rounds of showers and thunderstorms over the next few days will elevate the threat of flash flooding. Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution, especially on flooded roads. The safety mantra to remember is: “Turn around, Don’t drown!”
