Connecticut Braces for Severe Weather Amid Stretch of Heat and Dryness

Hartford, CT — Following a prolonged period of dry and hot weather, Connecticut residents are being cautioned to prepare for severe thunderstorms that could bring damaging winds and hail on Thursday. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued multiple alerts warning of potential hazards across the state.

According to the NWS, showers and thunderstorms are forecasted to develop late Thursday morning and continue into the afternoon. The humid air mass, combined with temperatures reaching the upper 70s to low 80s, is conducive to the formation of severe weather. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is currently in effect for Fairfield County and other southern parts of the state until 8:45 a.m. The NWS has highlighted the possibility of “quarter-sized hail” during the heavy rain, which poses a significant risk of damage to vehicles and property.

Moreover, a hazardous weather outlook has been issued for Litchfield County. The primary threats in this region include “damaging winds” and hail, which could result in power outages, downed trees, and property damage. “Another very warm day today, but with it will come the risk for a few strong to locally severe thunderstorms,” the NWS Boston office noted on X, formerly known as Twitter. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.

The NWS emphasizes the importance of staying informed about the latest weather updates. People in affected areas should secure loose outdoor items, avoid driving during severe storms if possible, and seek shelter indoors, especially if a thunderstorm warning is issued.

Emergency services are on high alert, and additional resources are being mobilized to respond swiftly to any storm-related incidents. Connecticut officials urge residents to have an emergency plan in place and to monitor local news channels and weather reports throughout the day. As the state braces for potentially severe weather, the NWS and local authorities continue to monitor conditions closely, ready to provide timely updates and assistance as needed.
