Woman Found Living Inside Michigan Supermarket’s Rooftop Sign for Nearly a Year, Police Say

Woman Found Living Inside Michigan Supermarket's Rooftop

Midland, Michigan – A startling discovery was made on April 23 when contractors working on the roof of a Family Fare Supermarket in Midland stumbled upon a 34-year-old woman inhabiting the supermarket’s rooftop sign, where she had been living for approximately a year, according to Brennon Warren, spokesperson for the Midland Police Department, speaking to USA TODAY.

Describing the unusual setup, Warren explained that the contractors noticed an extension cord leading from one of the rooftop units to the particular sign where the woman had made her home. The sign, according to Warren, isn’t typical, resembling those seen on the sides of large retail stores like Target or Walmart. Instead, it is housed within a 10 to 15-foot hollow peak at the top of the supermarket’s roof, with a 3 by 4-foot access door situated behind it, making it sizable enough for someone to access.

Upon finding the woman, the contractors promptly informed the supermarket’s management, who then contacted the Midland Police Department. When officers ascended to the roof to speak with the woman, she willingly emerged from her compact living space and assured them of her departure, stating, “Don’t worry, I’m leaving,” Warren recounted.

Although the woman wasn’t formally charged, she was trespassed from the property, Warren confirmed. The police also offered her information about available services in the area to assist with her housing situation, although she declined any further assistance.

The woman vacated the supermarket’s sign on the same day, leaving behind some of her belongings due to space constraints. However, the store management has since been in contact with her, assisting in relocating her remaining possessions.

In response to the incident, the Family Fare Supermarkets chain issued an emailed statement expressing pride in their associates’ compassionate and professional handling of the situation. They emphasized the ongoing issue of ensuring ample safe and affordable housing, calling for community collaboration in addressing this widespread concern.

The peculiar case sheds light on the complexities of homelessness and the challenges individuals face in securing stable housing, prompting a call for increased support and resources to aid vulnerable populations.
